• Hi guys,

For the last two days in a row I have received an email from Google advising the following:
    Today’s email-
Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 93 errors while attempting to access your robots.txt. To ensure that we didn’t crawl any pages listed in that file, we postponed our crawl. Your site’s overall robots.txt error rate is 86.9%.
    And yesterday’s:
Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 30 errors while attempting to access your robots.txt. To ensure that we didn’t crawl any pages listed in that file, we postponed our crawl. Your site’s overall robots.txt error rate is 21.9%.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can check or how to fix this?

    Many thanks

  • did you look thru the other threads here with the same issue?

Has your web hosting had any service outages ?

Can you see in your web access logs that google has been trying to access robots.txt ?

Access your web files using either FTP or your web hosting file manager, you should have a file “robots.txt” in the root of your web files. This file should be readable (mode 444 at least)

It should look something like this:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-content/
    Disallow: /wp-includes/
    Disallow: /wp-admin/

    Thank you Janes and Ross.

yes I did read through a number of similar Googlebot/Robots.txt issues in the forums first but I couldnt find a resolution, sometimes there was none and others seemed quite different from mine.
Also, I wondered if it might be something to do with WordPress 4.

My site is https://www.whichinvest.com and my host is 1and1.co.uk.

I couldn’t find my Robots’txt file in my FTP account so I called 1and1 support and they have escalated the issue to look in to it.

I’ll report back with any updates.

    Many thanks for your help.

If you don’t have a robots.txt (or have lost it), then just create a new one, robots.txt with contents:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-content/
    Disallow: /wp-includes/
    Disallow: /wp-admin/

Upload it to your WordPress base directory, the same place you have files “wp-config.php”, and directories “wp-admin” etc

    Thanks Ross.

    I have taken your advice.

I’ll wait for Google to crawl the website sometime today.

    Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem. I’v tried anything that you posted here, as well other threads.

I see that the new wordpress does nor include a robots.txt file
