• Hi I am not a tech in IT but update my own website that was designed by another company and placed on their server. I am trying to do my own SEO due to a lack of funds.

I read on the Google Webmasters site that it helps with rankings if I use their search console. To do this I need to verify my www. website (the non www is already verified) and to verify the site I need to upload an html file. I do not have access to the ISP space, just the WordPress site to make alterations and create new pages etc.

How can I upload this verification file without having to pay the company to do it for me?

Info re the search console can be found here.
    Google Webmasters

    hope this makes sense.

  • Hey Anne,

You don’t need ISP space access to be able to do this

    1) You need to install an ‘Insert Headers and Footers’ plugin,
    2) Go to Google Webmaster and copy the meta tag.
    3) Paste it into ‘Scripts in Header’ and save settings
    4) Return to Google Webmaster and click ‘Verify’
    5) Success will be shown by a green checkmark

    Good Luck! ??

(PS Anne, if you don’t have access to Google Webmaster, you can set it up easily with a gmail account)

    Thanks skelch.

I have just tried that and installed a plugin that said was compatible with my wordpress but then once activated it said “The Header and Footer plugin(s) might cause issues when used in conjunction with Yoast SEO”. So I de-activated it.

Then I noticed that Yoast (which is installed) has a search console so perhaps I should use that.

Re Webmaster the initial URL without the www. was automatically set up with my Gmail account and when I logged into Google Analytics.

Ok the Yoast console did not work.

Would I automatically have a header? I have an image and the menu along the top. My theme is Avada v3.7.3. can I access the header via the theme?

Sorry not really sure what I am talking about. I am so afraid of making a mess of this site.

    Found it! ??

It is in Appearance, Theme options, General and there is a section for Google tracing code. I have just verified the www. site.

    Yippee! Well done Anne! ??

If this doesn’t work the first time… no worries!! Try again about every minute. It took me 5 times to finally get the green success signal.
