Unless you use caching, sitemap files are dynamically generated like the rest of WordPress. However, looking at your website quickly, this behavior doesn’t seem to be “standard” WordPress; in particular how 404 errors are handled.

    Thank you Auctollo
I asked 123reg to locate the sitemap for me and they came back with this reply

I’ve checked the files for ncscomputers.uk on your Managed WordPress hosting via the File Manager, and there is no ‘sitemap’ or similarly called file in the www root folder.

Checking the plugin folder, ‘wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator’ there is a file called ‘sitemap.xsl.

If this is the file you are looking for, this can be accessed via https://ncscomputers.uk/wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/sitemap.xsl

    Is it sitemap.xsl?

No, it’s sitemap.xml. Again the file is dynamically generated like the rest of WordPress. Do you have a staging area for testing?

I think I have found out what the problem may be from their latest answer. I am using a managed wordpress space and have no cpanel control over access to root.

“The plugin you are using for the Sitemap may go against the security measures implemented on the platform. If you wish to have full control over the WordPress installation, you would need a cPanel web hosting”

I guess there is no option to choose the location for saving the xml file..

I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble. Please note that all major sitemap generators (various SEO plugins also have sitemap generators) generate sitemaps dynamically and use the exact same file name. For this reason, we have some confidence that you may need to escalate this issue to your web developer or to a higher tier of support with your web host. Sitemap generators have worked in exactly this way for a decade.
