Google Site Kit creates duplicate GA tags if GA is implemented in GTM. This appears to be a known issue, so I’m not sure why it was marked resolved in another area.

I understand that this might be out of scope to transfer all functionality from GA to GA-in-GTM, but it seems that options could be made available to the user, such as a warning firing if GA tracking code is in GA, or even having the GA code stripped out of GTM if requested.

Many thanks for getting in touch. Site Kit uses the Google Tag Manager implementation for Analytics, which follows best practices. If you’re also using Google Tag Manager with an Analytics tag you can manually remove your Analytics snippet placed via the Site Kit Analytics module to ensure no additional snippet placements.

We’re also investigating ways to better facilitate those who already use Tag Manager to implement Analytics as you’ll see from the below GitHub issue.
    https://github.com/google/site-kit-wp/issues/1381

You can keep watch of that issue and I can keep you notified here once resolved. Let me know if you have any additional queries on this.

I’m confused. Site Kit <i>doesn’t</i> use the Google Tag Manager implementation for Analytics. Best practice, I believe, is to use the GA tag within GTM. When this is done, Site Kit incorrectly ads the GA tag twice. So how is this a correct implementation?

The legacy tracking code previously provided by Google Analytics didn’t include any Google Tag Manager references, with an analytics.js referenced in the code snippet provided by Google Analytics.

If a user doesn’t implement Google Tag Manager the Analytics snippet will includes a reference to https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js. That’s the Google Tag Manager reference I was referring to, apologies for the confusion. You’ll find out more here.

I’ll keep you updated here once it’s possible to decouple the Analytics and Tag Manager modules. In the meantime have you used the option to “Let Site Kit place code on your site” from within the Analytics settings?
