  • Direct from the instructions:

    == Installation ==

    1. Upload the full directory into your wp-content/plugins directory
    2. Make your blog directory writeable OR create two files called sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz and make them writeable via CHMOD In most cases, your blog directory is already writeable.

    For anyone who’s interested… I have a script that turns your Google compliant XML sitemap into a Yahoo compliant sitemap that you can submit to Yahoo.

    It’s free.

    I’m getting a strange error that’s probably very simple to correct, but I lack understanding on the problem. Whenever I use any version of the plugin (2.x-3.01b) I get the following message

    Could not write into /cgi-bin/php/sitemap.xml

    I tried leaving a blank file and doing a CHMOD 666 to it, and got the same message. I generated a sitemap at another site, did the CHMOD 666 and got the same message. I also tried CHMOD 777 on both versions of the file. Does anyone have any idea on what’s wrong?

    Why is the file in the cgi-bin/php directory to begin with?

    I’m not sure if my question has been already answered, but do you know how to exclude specific Pages from the sitemap (using Google Sitemap 2.7.1 plugin) ?

    Thank you in advance!

    vkaryl – I don’t know–I didn’t put it there, and (as near as I can tell) this directory doesn’t exist. On my host, the map is in the root directory. (homepage.com/sitemap.xml). I’m using GoDaddy for hosting. Does anyone have any idea?

    Thanks again–sorry if this is a dumb question.

    fer – I also had the same problem with my godaddy account. The auto-detection doesn’t work properly so you have to set the “manual location” option. To retrieve the correct absolute path, read this godaddy FAQ page:
    https://help.godaddy.com/article.php?article_id=58&topic_id=&&

    Once you set this right, it should point to your root directory and it should work fine.

    Has anybody had problems with google when wordpress is installed on the root of the domain. I was able to install the plugin and create the sitemap no problem but when I log into my Google none of my URLs are valid because the sitemap is located at the root of my domain. Does anybody know of a workaround for this or do I need to install wordpress in a seperate directory?

    It seems the link for Arne’s plugin isn’t functioning; does anyone have an unmodified copy of this plugin?

    Folks, if anybody cares about RESULTS (rather than just on installing the plugin), let me tell you that SUBMITTING A SITEMAP CAN BE DEVASTATING FOR YOUR ESTABLISHED BLOG.

    If you have a blog that has a lot of traffic, DO NOT SUBMIT A SITEMAP TO GOOGLE, because it will cut your Google referrals at least in half. Nobody knows why this is, (there’s plenty of discussion and conjecture about on Google Group Sitemap section) but I am just telling you what actually happens.

    On the other hand, if your site is new, then installing the sitemap plugin and submitting sitemaps to Google seems to have a positive effect.

    YOU ALL HAVE BEEN WARNED!
