Google sitemap plugin causes posting and syntax errors – here’s a workaround

I installed the plugin last night and today found I couldn’t post to my blog.

When I switch off the plugin the database error report I was getting in post.php does not replicate and I can post entries to my blog. If I switch it back on, I cannot post to my site and get the following error message instead:

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘)’ at line 3

I created test comments and posts with the plugin turned off just fine, but when I turned the plugin back on I could not delete either test comments or posts. Again, switch it off and I was able to.

I understand and appreciate the plugin is still in beta, as is the new Google indexing functionality but I think these problems aren’t exactly small and so I hope a fix is found and released soon.

My workaround for the time being is to switch off the plugin before posting an entry to my blog and to turn it back on again afterwards. Doing this means the XML file the plugin creates for Google’s purposes remains in place and switching the plugin off and on again doesn’t affect it or its functions adversely as far as I am able to tell.

I have checked to see if leaving the plugin switched on affects the posting of comments to my blog or the functionality of any other plugins I am running and, so far, it doesn’t appear to. It seems to affect only me posting to my blog and deleting anything in the admin tool. I can do neither with the plugin switched on.

So until a better version of the plugin is released I will use my workaround. I hope this might be of help to someone else out there, too! >;-)
