Hi Mike,
The message you are seeing in the screenshot you shared shows up when your web hosting provider kills the Pagespeed task before it has finished its work.
Web hosting providers, especially more affordable ‘shared’ hosting providers, can have strict limits on how long a task is allowed to run in the background before it is ended.
If this is not something that you’ve experience with this hosting provider before, then there are a few possibilities as to why you are seeing this now, in order from most to least likely:
- The latest version of Google Pagespeed Insights (v5) takes longer to scan your site than previous versions of their API did. And now you are running into this timeout
- Your site has become slower for some reason, making these scans take longer
- Your web hosting provider has modified the allowed time for scripts to run
I’ve noticed Pagespeed v5 does take longer to scan pages I’ve tested with, so that is most likely why you are seeing this now and not before.
Whatever the cause, there are some tools included with this plugin to help mitigate/work around these web host limitations. Check out the ‘Maximum Script Run Time’ setting in the ‘Advanced Configuration’ section of the options page, and read the instructions under that field for some ideas on how to best implement it.
I hope this helps,
Matt Keys
