I’m currently using the Yoast plugin on my WordPress website, which allows me to customise the site title, description, etc for an article page, but Google is not paying attention to it.

It keeps adding the author name of an article to the Google SERP title for no reason. For example, an article called ‘How To End Britain’s Pandemic’ comes up in search as ‘How To End Britain’s Pandemic – New Politic – Zeyd Anwar’. Zeyd Anwar is not the author of the piece, but he simply uploaded it on the WordPress backend. However, Zeyd Anwar is listed as an author on WordPress. The writer for this article is Mike Buckley, and is listed as such on WordPress backend too.

I have tried reindexing the pages on Google search console but this doesn’t appear to work either. Is there a way to remove the author and just have the article name and site title in Google SERP?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hello @newpolitic,

Thanks for reaching out about what your post looks like in Google search results.

I viewed the page source of https://newpolitic.com/2021/08/how-to-end-britains-pandemic/, and the title is:

    <title>How to End Britain's Pandemic – New Politic</title>

Interestingly, the author’s name is not included. Checking https://newpolitic.com/2021/03/how-our-meritocracy-turned-tyrannical/ also, the author’s name is not included:

<title>How Our Meritocracy Turned Tyrannical – New Politic</title>

A recommendation would have been to request re-indexing which you mentioned didn’t work; we know this can be annoying! The title and description you enter in our snippet preview is a suggestion for Google. If you’ve crafted awesome meta tags for your blog posts, nothing is more annoying than Google showing other information for your site in the search results. Google’s generation of page titles (and descriptions) is completely automated. Google’s goal is to best represent and describe each result. They use a number of different sources to get this information. In doing so, they try to make the search results as relevant as possible. Due to this being handled on Google’s end, there is little you can do to force Google to display your preferred title and description other than changing them and testing which one sticks. We have an extensive knowledge base article that can help you understand why: Google is showing the wrong title for your site.

Thanks! I’m not really sure what I can do, as this is quite frustrating.

For example, the Google search result for this article:
What Does ‘SMD’ Mean in Text? – New Politic – Foreign Affairshttps://newpolitic.com ? 2021/09 ? what-does-smd-mea… is ‘What Does SMD Mean in Text – New Politic – Foreign Affairs’. This article has nothing to do with foreign affairs! It’s extremely odd. Hoping I can do something to fix this.

    Hi @newpolitic

We did a SITE: search for https://newpolitic.com/2021/09/what-does-smd-mean-in-text/ and we do see that it is outputting in the search results as:

What Does ‘SMD’ Mean in Text? – – Foreign Affairs

even though your title tag is set to:

<title>What Does ‘SMD’ Mean in Text? -</title>

We can only recommend that you continue to refine your SEO titles from time to time and try to request or fetch for the updated information in Google Search Console and hope that Google will output your preferred title. Otherwise, it’ll still be their call and ultimately their decision what they would output in the search results – https://yoast.com/help/google-shows-different-titles-for-my-site/
