  • I’m wondering this too?–?I switched to Leaflet when the pricing changes were announced, but their maps don’t look nearly as good as Google’s. Earlier this week I discovered that embedding Google Maps was free, so switched back to them, but a quarter of my monthly credit has gone after just three days! I’m using Leaflet again.

According to Google’s pricing info, with the free mode “User interactions with the map, such as panning, zooming, or switching map layers, do not generate additional map loads.” I’d assumed that Geo Mashup would fall under this description, but apparently not, and I’m wondering what additional resources are being used. If anyone else can shed some light on this I’d love to know.

Edit: “Does switching off street view suffice?”

I didn’t know that was an option. How can it be done?

Me too. I paid 120 Euro for August, now I switched off Google Maps for Leaflet. But this looks sh… Couldn’t we have the embed mode?

Me too. I had no payment up to now, but the map doesn’t worked anymore because of a missing Google API. Thanks for the hint above I have temporarily switched to “Leaflet” in the option. But the basic “Embed” mode from Google free of charge would be helpful. Thanks, Peter

Here’s an example of the map tag option that disables street view:

    [geo_mashup_map enable_street_view="false"]

I can’t see anywhere that distinguishes embed vs advanced embed in my usage stats, if anyone tries this please report back with your results.

A closer reading reveals that any use of the javascript API is counted as a Dynamic map display.

It does look like street view panorama usage may be counted as another load, but I don’t think the map options make a difference. It does look like you could use the static=”true” option to get a cheaper static map API load where that is sufficient.

Thanks Dylan. I’d experimented with disabling various elements and, aside from the static map, found nothing that reduced the costs. I switched back to Leaflet in the end.
