Google Error: Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page…

  • I get this error message for every sitemap I try to add: “Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.” I saw your “fix” for W3 Total Cache users, however, I still get the error when I deactivated that plugin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jen,

    Can you confirm that you have submitted in Search Console the following address: sitemap_index.xml ?

    We ask as we’ve checked your XML Sitemap and it’s loading correctly. If you submitted an incorrect URL, that would be indeed an HTML page, which would explain the error which you’ve mentioned.
