    Hi,

My client is selling virtual, downloadable products. Setting is Force Downloads. When linking to Google Drive files to download, it downloads an oddly named file without extension. When linking to a file stored on the server, all goes well.

I have seen more threads about this, including someone suggesting converting the links to download links instead of preview (Google Drive’s default). I did that, and this is the result. The link functions correctly. But still, the issue persists.

    Your help is much appreciated.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Howdy!

If you use the Redirect Only download option instead of the Force Downloads option under WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Downloadable products, Google Drive links should work for you.

Hi @dynamiczach, thanks! I didn’t go for Redirect Only because when I selected it, I got the following message:

Your store is configured to serve digital products using “Redirect only” method. This method is deprecated, please switch to a different method instead.

If you’re only linking to Google Drive files, then redirect only should work fine.

However, it would share the link with the user and they could theoretically share that link with others for access.

If that’s a problem, then I’d recommend keeping the Force Downloads option. I tested with the google drive link you sent used for a product, and it worked fine for me to download with my test order. I’d recommend setting a Download limit for the product (with the Force Downloads setting enabled) which would not allow the user to share the direct download link they receive after purchase.

Hi @dynamiczach, thanks for your reply. I’d really prefer to use Force Downloads. I use the same link but it doesn’t work for me. I’ll deactivate all plugins, theme etc. and see if the issue persists then or not. I’ll report back. ??

Okay. Let me know how the testing goes!

Hi @dynamiczach, the issue persists. What else could I try do you think?

    Thanks for testing.

Looks like this is actually a known issue, and you can read more about it here:

    https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/issues/26879

There are some options, and a workaround suggested there.

Ah, thanks for letting me know @dynamiczach. The workaround won’t really work for my client, so we’re going with the redirect setting for now. ??
