How does MI work with the newly introduced GA4? As it doesn’t use conventional tags, when I attempt to upgrade to GA4 it can’t enable data collection using existing tags. Will this be implemented/updated in a future build? If not, what’s the workaround?

  • I need this as well. I just setup a new GA account and it’s using G-XXXX instead of UA-XXXX which is not recognized by the plugin. Thanks!

same here, i will look for something else as this plugin is not compatible with GA4 yet

Same here. I just blasted off about 2 hours pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I’m getting this error, thinking it must be my fault since I’m a WP newbie:

    Authentication Issue:
The selected account doesn’t have any Google Analytics Web properties.
Please select another Google Account and make sure your Google Analytics property is set as “Web” not “Apps and web” or “Apps”.

Read through about 5 guides, 5 or so different google help pages, searching web and forums, retrying, uninstalling, troubleshooting, deleting streams, etc. Finally I land on the google page for ‘universal analytics’, where it super briefly and succinctly says,

    About Universal Analytics
Universal Analytics refers to the previous generation of Analytics. This was the default property type for websites prior to October 14, 2020.

Based on what I’m seeing, it is no longer possible to setup a UA account. Previous UA users can apparently keep using it and have the option to upgrade, but new users are forced into a GA account.

Hopefully the plugin will be updated soon, although this seems to have been in beta for quite awhile.

We currently support GAv3 also known as “web” accounts, which we recommend users stay with for now, particularly since they can be upgraded once Google stabilizes v4 in a couple clicks.

Google’s v4, which recently launched, doesn’t yet support all of the features of v3 and consequentially/additionally doesn’t have all of the developer APIs needed for anyone to build on top of yet.

We’ll be adding support for it for all users as they finish rolling out developer APIs and also fix the bugs we’ve reported with the new v4 style accounts. When ready, we’ll be reaching out to users with a simple, seamless upgrade.

In the meantime, if you need to make a new web property, here’s a video showing which options you need to enable so that it’s compatible with MonsterInsights: https://a.supportally.com/YeX0Nx

Hello, also have the issue and clients want to upgrade as GA4 offers a link to BigQuery so no limitations as set in the free GA account. Also no documentation/details how to do custom dimensions so maybe you can do an update to run both (as recommended by Google) and have GA4 populated with the custom dimensions? Is that possible to do so that what is compatibile / working can at least feed in to GA4 so run both GA3 and GA4 together?

So, has anyone figured out how to keep MI for GA3 as it is now and also connect to GA4? Any ideas, tips?

MI has posted instruction how you can still setup UA- account https://www.monsterinsights.com/how-to-properly-setup-google-analytics-in-wordpress/

@calculatorsworld that is for GA3 with analytics.js and not GA4 that uses gtag.js and totally does not work with MI

I tried installing Monsterinsights Pro to link to Google Analytics 4 just now (2020/12/03) and still couldn’t. See snapshot here. ?? ?? ??

Will the update be happening soon?

It’s utter insanity that it is now February 8 2021 and MI STILL hasn’t got their plugin working to connect to a GA4 property. The API’s are there and work.

Frustrating on new sites where we have to create a GA4 property in Analytics that MI’s default ‘connect’ tool can’t see them.

I’m switching to Analytify on all new websites because it properly supports GA4. Get it together MI.

@masterbeat the problem is with Google as many of the funtionalities not working properly and not even working on AMP, Custom dimensions are not like events and it is extremely unreliable and inacurrate it’s a joke really. MI cannot make it work yet even if they wanted to so might take a week or months before we can have it setup in MI. The best bet is to create a GA4 propery and through GA link them up so GA3 to GA4 or at least for now it is.
