We are in the process of setting up Google Analytics 4 on all of our websites.

I noticed that there is a way to create a Google Analytics 4 property through Sitekit.

I’ve set it up on the site mentioned, however if Sitekit is ever signed out, it appears that the tag doesn’t fire anymore?

This wasn’t an issue with Universal Analytics. If you setup Sitekit with Analytics and instruct it to place the tag, it would place the UA tag on the site and even if Sitekit was signed out (due to the OAUTH limit of 50 sites per account), the tag was still placed and firing on the site.

However, it doesn’t seem to work this way for Google Analytics 4. If I setup GA4 on a website, and Sitekit is signed out, the tag isn’t placed and isn’t firing. I have to sign back into Sitekit on the WordPress backend and THEN i will see it firing using Tag Assistant.

Should I manually add the GA4 tag (and tell Sitekit not to place the tag on my site) to prevent this from happening? I just assumed that it worked the same way as Sitekit handles Universal Analytics.

I cleared the cache on the site and it appears to be working now even if Sitekit is disconnected on the backend. I just want to confirm though …

The GA4 configuration works the same way as the Universal Analytics configuration with Sitekit, correct? If Sitekit is disconnected on the backend of WordPress, the GA4 tag will still be placed on the site and firing to Analytics right?

Hi @alexdx thanks for getting in touch. I can confirm with you that I can see both your UA and GA4 codes on your site when checking via the tag assistant. This all looks correct and glad you were able to resolve your issue by clearing the cache.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

I need to know that if Sitekit becomes signed out on the backend of WordPress that both my tags (UA and GA4) will still be inserted and firing.

@alexdx If Site Kit is disconnected it only disconnects the connected Google account from Site Kit. The snippets will remain on the site (both a UA and a GA4 snippet) – providing they were added and a UA and GA4 snippet placed before disconnecting a Google account.
Only if the plugin is deactivated or deleted will the snippets will be removed.

So you should be good to go yes. Is there anything else I can help with?

@alexdx just to follow up on that also, if you want to view Site Kit data within the Site Kit dashboards you won’t be able to do so until you redo the plugin setup. So the snippets will remain, but you won’t be able to view data within the Site Kit dashboards.

I set it up on this site: [site] and the GA4 tag is not showing (SiteKit is signed out on the backend).

@alexdx Before you signed out of Site Kit did you have your GA4 property connected in Site Kit using the Analytics module? And how did you create and place the property? Was this also done with Site Kit or a different way?

    Thread Starter alexDx

    (@alexdx)

Yes, I signed into Sitekit and connected both UA and GA4 through Sitekit. Sitekit created a new property for GA4. Both were connected and when I went into SiteKit -> Settings -> Analytics and it said “Snippet is inserted” for both tags. I went back a week later and checked, and the UA tag is showing, but the GA4 tag is not placed on the site.

If you run your site through the Tag Assistant tool are both your UA and GA4 containers found?

When checking this myself I can see both your UA and GA4 properties. Could you confirm what you can see?

Thanks Adam, I see it now when I refresh the page a few times. Seems like Tag Assistant doesn’t see it when I refresh sometimes, but I can see the snippet in the source code of the site. As long as it 100% remains inserted even when Sitekit is signed out, I think I’m good here.

@alexdx That’s great, glad you can now see it. Yes it will remain placed on your site if you are signed out of Site Kit.
