this is a good plugin which helps sorting out the media librarys shortcomings.

the big complaint with this plugin and even more with the pro version ist the obtrusive use of advertisements!
obviously this plugin also checks for other plugins for which the author might have substitutes – and suggests trying them by popup messages. this is a real no go in every which way.
stop doing this and the review might get better afterwards. if your plugin convinces with good performance there might be the chance to check out other ones from the same author. but i never ever want to be forced to in this manner. period.

basically five stars – four of them cropped for unwanted and totally inappropriate avertising actions on every occasion.

    EDIT:
meanwhile it has to be stated, that the developer listened to the complaints and has changed the advertising thing to the better.
after observing for several weeks there were no more strange ‘hints’ in unexpected places so far.
and so i can give this plugin currently the -for its helpfulness and glitch-free funcionality- deserved five stars.
thanks for listening and keep up the great work.

    Hi @dasigna !

Here is Matthew. Thanks for your words and review.

    – Are you using the free version or the PRO version of the plugin?
    – Which advertisement do you exactly know?

We want to do our best to satisfy our customers and are open for changes. I am looking forward to your answer and hope for a cooperation with you.

I wish you a nice weekend!

    Regards,

    hi,

referring to the free version here.
using both. both bring up the same messages.

as for the other question: i think you will know best what little bluish tooltips appear under certain conditions in which areas… right?

no good practise and unwanted anyways. just stop doing so.

    nice weekend ??

    Hi again @dasigna !

Since my colleague Jan and I work full-time on WordPress plugins, marketing is part of it, too. But now we would like to find the best solution for our customer together with you, so that such a rating does not occur anymore.

A tip for you: Navigate to Settings > General and deactivate the Products of devowl.io checkbox.

But I think, we could improve more in this marketing section. In the following I will briefly summarize which ads we place in our plugin “Real Media Library”.

    Up-Selling:

As the name implies, the up-selling only takes place in the free version. This means that if you use a feature in the free version of Real Media Library that is only available in the PRO version, you will be referred to the PRO version. I think this method is essential and I also think that this will not annoy most users.

    Cross-Selling:

Cross-selling refers to the advertising of other products. This currently takes place in the free as well as in the PRO version of Real Media Library.

We have currently implemented cross-selling in such a way that “tooltips” appear in the functionalities that the respective other product also covers. For example, when creating a category, the plugin “Real Categories Management” is referred to.

Such tooltips always appear randomly, depending on which functionality is being advertised, but always only every 7 days. If you have purchased a PRO plugin from us, a tooltip only appears every 14 days. I would also like to point out that if a tooltip for another plugin is displayed for the second time, it should be removed with a checkbox “Do not display again”. This means that there will be no more advertising for this plugin.

Have you noticed any different behavior here? If so, I would ask you to report it to me, because then it is probably a bug that we want to fix as soon as possible.

    How can we improve?

Now I ask you specifically, what potential improvements do you see here? What would we need to change so that we can continue to follow our marketing but not scare off our customers – customers are the most important thing in our business?

I’m using this thread as a basis to discuss with my colleague @jankarres next week as well, so we can come up with an improvement and make you happy.

    Best regards,
    Matthew ??

    o.k. short breakdown.

while i cant neighter speak for other users nor for the majority, i’l try to point out my point of view towards the behaviour of presenting free plugins…

    general

first: “Products of devowl.io” checkbox – used to be there, but obviously no longer the case. so nothing to deactivate.

dont want to go too deep into this, as every developer should have his own basis of how he presents his products and advertises other ones.
but for sure in a free plugin this should not be obtrusive at all in any way.
i dont want random popups or tootips (whatever) appear randomly in different and unexpected places. and for sure never ever for clients and their users asking me whats going on there. -> lately ditched off your pluging in testing environment just before buying the pro because of that.

a developer that has trust in his product should not have the urge to force anyone into anything.
already abandoned several plugins because of comparably behaviour – amongst others some infamous seo plugin. i want to keep my backend clean. at least not ‘spammed’ by anything i didnt made myself.

    upsells

    right. yeah – why not?
but dont make them pop up randomly and even not in unexpected places.
if your plugin convinces me and i need to have more than the free folders i’ll go and buy the pro anyway. because its worth it and i want for sure to honour your work.
those in opposite who want everything for free wont even buy it because of your desperate ads.

    cross-sells

i buyed the pro and you plugin searches my page for others you might have a replacement too? come on whats this? did i ask you to do so? is this gentlemans behaviour?
this for sure is complete bullshit. sorry. what else are you spying for?
    gdpr compliance in sight?
    absolutely nogo!

    so what

first: put the settings of your plugin in one place – dedicated subfolder under main settings. done. no searching here and there, all to be found where it belongs to – including deactivation of “buing reminders” and “calling home” options.
and for gods sake you may put your informations about other services you provide into that page. but nowhere else. period.

behaviour like the one youre showing lately should not appear at all imho.

provide something for free if you wish to. even use it as a jump start for pro version. no problem with that at all. but stop enforcing anything in obtrusive manners.

the list of already abandoned plugings because of this is quite long meanwhile (at least on my side) – i dont want to add another one.

i already have a handsome number of pro licenses of your plugin up and running also. so i know it and i dont want to be bugged by it.

    Hi dasigna,

thanks for your detailed feedback, dasigna. It helps a lot to improve.

We considered your feedback as well as the feedback from two other users from last week in a meeting today to improve the advertising in our plugins.

General and cross-selling: In the next version of Real Media Library we will disable all cross-selling ads. We understand the criticism of this. As a result, the checkbox “Products of devowl.io” will disappear, because there will be no more cross-selling ads to deactivate.

Up-selling: The up-selling ads will be slightly adjusted so that they only appear when you set a limit or try to use a feature that is only available in a PRO version to make it less intrusive.

Consequently, the PRO versions of our plugins will no longer contain advertising (currently only cross-selling ads).

Settings in one place: This is a complicated topic, which we have discussed internally a few times, because you can have different philosophies about it. Some people like you want to have a settings center for each plugin, where you can find all the settings of a plugin. On the other hand, if you use several plugins, and they have their own settings center, it can get confusing, too. You have a lot of settings centers to control in different ways. That’s why we try to integrate the settings where they would be meaningful if the functions of our plugins were a core feature of WordPress.

The new version of the Real Media Library with the changes regarding the ads will be released by the end of the week. I hope you try it and maybe it will change your opinion about our review ??

    Best regards,

    Jan

    hi jan,

sounds good. love developers that listen ??

    settings in one place
    completely disagree…
if one has only three plugins that spread their settings all over it might already get totally confusing. if they all have them in their own sub-item under ‘settings’ you’ll find them always and dont have to fiddle around which settings belong to which plugin in doubt. separated settings pages are way clearer!

and remember – a dedicated settings page might give you the opportunity to place hints for your other plugins without too much distraction ??

    Hi,

just a short note that Real Media Library 4.11.0 was released today. This release includes the changes explained above.

We take your feedback on the settings into account if the topic is taken up by several users. For the time being, we will not change it, as this is rarely requested.

I hope you will give it a try, and we would be more than happy if you could reconsider your rating after testing the new version ??

    Best regards,
