I have tried installing this plugin, I get it to install without issue however when I go through the setup process the first thing I get is a message saying the site may not be ready for Google Site Kit.

I get through the setup and click on “Go to my Dashboard” with everything verified. Upon being returned to the site I either get a “Unable to authenticate Site Kit, as no client credentials exist” or it redirects back to “Sign in with Google to setup site kit..

I have disabled all plugins and themes on the site (left default twentytwenty theme) as a test, cleared broswer cache and it still failed.

I have successfully set this site kit plugin on many other sites without issue. When I go through sitekit.withgoogle.com from the plugin it shows all is ok though which is what makes this thing weird.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

@nultz Sorry to hear you’ve been encountering issues when trying to setup Site Kit. If not already attempted can you try and reset Site Kit (Site Kit > Settings > Admin Settings > Reset Site Kit) before deleting the plugin in full. After doing so please install and attempt setup once more using a browser incognito window?

Alternatively please try attempt setup from another device. There may be local software impacting your setup, such as an ad blocker or firewall.

If the above fails please share your Site Health information and we can troubleshoot further. You can use this form to share privately.

Hey James, thanks for the prompt response. I attempted to do what you have suggested but it failed. I have completed the site health form privately as requested.

@nultz Thanks for the update. I’ve checked your details and I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary in relation to plugins. I did notice your http site doesn’t redirect to your secure (https) site. Can you put a redirection in place to ensure all traffic is https before attempting setup once more using a browser incognito window? You can usually place a redirect at host level.

If the above fails please inform me of the following and I can follow up with the team on your case:
    1. At what stage does setup fail, and do you encounter the “may not be ready for Google Site Kit” or any other notice
    2. When you setup Site Kit on other sites were you using the same device?

No worries, I have made sure the redirections are working as expected. Still no luck.

Going through the setup process it seems to fail at the point you have mentioned. The weird thing is you can go through the process and it says “Congratulations” from googles side. When you return it goes back to the start of the setup process again.

In relation to your second question about setting up other devices on same device, the answer is. I have now set it up without issue on many other sites. I just do not understand why it is failing on this particular site. it makes no sense.

@nultz Thanks for providing the update. Let me check your site with the team. In some cases before sites are fully secure the http version of the site can get registered on Site Kits authentication service.

If you’d like to try and refresh your site from the Site Kit service you can follow the steps below. Either way I’ll follow up with the team in your case and report back to you here. Many thanks for your patience while we look into this.
    1. Access this link and unverify your email from all versions of this domain name
    2. Temporarily switch your “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)” from https://gasbottlerefills.com to https://gasbottlerefills.com in your WordPress General Settings configuration. This https > http change should trigger a change in the Site Kit authentication service
    3. Logout of your WordPress admin dashboard
    4. Log back in and then undo the changes you made (reverting back to the full address with https
    5. Reset Site Kit and attempt setup once more

@nultz No problem, thanks for the update. I’ll report back to you here after checking your setup with the team and see if we can notice any abnormalities. In the meantime if you get an opportunity please share your Site Health information once more, feel free to use the same form.

    Hey James,
just posted the details you wanted.

    (@jamesosborne)

@nultz Thanks for providing the details. I’ve checked with the team and everything seems fine when it comes to your site setup. I noticed a verification tag on your site, not via Site Kit. Can you delete this tag before resetting Site Kit an starting the setup process once more? It may have been manually inserted into your theme files.

    Thread Starter Nultz

    (@nultz)

So I have been through the process again and no luck. I did find the verification tag was actually one inserted by Sitekit in to the wp_usermeta table.

That being said after I removed the record from the database, went through the site kit process and got redirected back to the admin panel. Upon getting redirected to the admin panel I got the following statement:

Unable to authenticate Site Kit, as no client credentials exist. To resume setup, start here.

I clicked on the “start here” link and it looped once again with no change in the outcome.

    (@nultz)

I forgot to mention in my last post the resume setup link points to https://xxxxxx.xxx/wp-admin/admin.php?page=googlesitekit-splash

@nultz thanks for the update and your attempts thus far. Could you re-send your Site Health information via the form?

There is Site Kit info toward the bottom that will give us an indication of the current state of the site on the service.

    Hi Renee,
I have just resent the site health information and it hasn’t changed

@nultz Many thanks for the update, and appreciate your patience on this issue. We don’t see anything unusual with your setup from our side. If you’re happy to troubleshoot further can you perform the steps below to in order to start a clean slate setup on your site?
    1. Reset Site Kit
    2. Access this link and unverify all versions of your domain name (there should be four in total between http/https, www/non www).
    3. Update to the latest version of Site Kit (version 1.10.0 is just released)
    4. From the Chrome incognito browser install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    5. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”. (This will temporarily deactivate other plugins and switch to a default theme – for you only, as a logged in user).
    6. From the the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google”
    7. Attempt to setup the plugin once more

You can exit troubleshooting mode afterwards.

    (@nultz)

    Hi @jamesosborne,
I have attempted to run the health check plugin and I cannot get it in to the troubleshooting mode. I am now starting to wonder if there is some more serious issues with this site install than first expected.

needless to say that site kit didn’t work again.

    any other ideas?
