    how to fix this and how to prevent this from happening again?

    There’s always a reason, even if it’s not apparent to us ??

    This is a hosting issue. Something has definitely changed on the hosting server or your individual hosting account. This commonly happens when PHP is upgraded on the server, but the new version of PHP may not have the appropriate MySQL extension selected.
