I just want to pass on a recent discussion I had with tech assistance at Godaddy. I had many intermittent slow access periods to my web site hosted with Godaddy from day one and many cases of 500 server error messages.
The Godaddy email tech. help (two times) had no solutions but when I spoke with a tech on the phone he advised me it was not advisable to have my WordPress web site on a Windows based server with them because of some issues with some plugins sometimes and I should switch to a Linux based server.
I made the switch and I did not have to do anything, they handled it all and my site landing page access went from a 30+ second delay to a 3 second delay.
Even using WordPress editor now only has a 1 sec. delay between pages compared with a 5 sec. delay before. For me it has been a fantastic switch. Of course, I am on a shared server and it also may have been the old server I was on was overloaded by other web sites and the new server I am on is not, but I am very happy with the switch.

    hamword,

I’m glad you made the switch to Linux. It’s definitely a better choice for WordPress. It’s related to how PHP runs on Windows web servers versus Linux. Any php application, not just WordPress, would run better on a Linux server.

Of course, this may change with future Windows server operating systems, but that’s how it is for now.
