I am switching from my WordPress dot com to a hosted wordpress dot org website. GoDaddy hosts the new WP website and issued a temp url. I was told by their help desk that I needed to have WP change the https://www.avonwaters.com url ip address to the new host’s IP. I have the new IP, who do I contact to change the IP address so my https://www.avonwaters.com will become, or reference, the new website?
Also, should I post the IP address in a public forum or is this kept private?

  • Can you use your domain name instead of the IP?

GoDaddy support said all is good on their side but that I must change the IP A record on the WordPress side to point to the correct IP. They say I must change my IP on wordpress side since I purchased the domain through WP and there is an admin panel in wp to do so. Any help finding that access would be appreciated.

No, I still get the same message with my https://www.avonwaters.com or avonwaters.com for both ports 21 and 22; both fail.

The Godaddy control panel will have a file manager that lets you see what is contained on your website – can you look there?

I only purchased their hosting services, and the manage hosting option only shows that the site is up and running, no issues but with the image of the page that says “Parked free by WordPress” When I go deeper into the managed side, it pulls up the page with parked as the webpage, no tools to manage ftp. That is why they told me to download filezilla.

In WP, there’s an edit function for my A record for https://www.avonwater.com. If I hit edit, it shows the domain, but not the IP address, only the example in gray eg. 1,1.1. etc. But it also shows “Are you sure you want to edit your A record. Doing so will result in not being able to access the site on wordpress.com.

Should I go ahead and edit that record so the IP address for Godaddy is saved there? I don’t really want to access wordpress.com since now I am dot org, do I? Advice?

I asked for advice from colleagues at wordpress.com and there are 2 options:

    1. You can set the IP address to the server’s IP, which can change at any time and with no warning

    or

    2. You can transfer the domain to GoDaddy, where you will be issued proper nameservers and it should work correctly.

So yes, you can change the IP and it should work but transferring would be the better fix.

Thanks Mark. I opted for the transfer so any server changes they would do would be seamless. After changing the IP address, Godaddy says wait another 24-48 hours.
