Will the Postie plugin cease to function on May 30, 2022 for all GMAIL connected users?
Gmail is alerting they will no longer support many 3rd party apps..
To make Postie connection — I had to turn on an “Allow less secure 3rd party apps” slider within Gmail… This slider is scheduled to be removed permanently on May 30, 2022…

Here is the “learn more” posted by Google..

Less secure apps & your Google Account
To help keep your account secure, starting May 30, 2022, ??Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password.

Please note this deadline does not apply to Google Workspace or Google Cloud Identity customers. The enforcement date for these customers will be announced on the Workspace blog at a later date.

For more information, please continue reading.

Special Note on Apple Device Sign-Ins. Users who have not recently signed into their Google Account using only username and password will be able to only make new sign in attempts using the Google account type starting from February 28, 2022. Existing users may continue to sign into their Google Account using their username and password until May 30, 2022.

Honestly, I was hoping Google would back off on this change. I have looked into it awhile back when they first announced it. It is going to make it very complicated if not impossible for the average user.

I will release a version that is compatible with the new Google mandate eventually. It is a significant change to support a single email provider.

    I’m working on a solution.

    Hi folks,

long-time postie user here and I totally slept through the (announced, as some purport here) gmail change. Can anyone recommend alternative (hopefully free) email providers that one could connect to instead? I’ve been very happy with gmail for personal use for many many years but following this change it’s kind of useless for allowing posts to a blog.

Thanks for postie & keep up the good work,

    Uwe

There is support for Gmail in the works if you can wait a few more weeks.

Others have reported that turning on 2-step and making an app specific password instead seemed to work.

Thanks Wayne, I’ll have a look.

    All the best,

    uwe

That worked nicely, thanks for your help mate!

    All the best,

Our system is down do to the Google force to 2 factor. We use Postie to auto process email arriving in a specific gmail account.

I’ve read a LOT about it, and can’t find a recipie for turning on 2 factor, getting an “app password” and getting Postie to again be able to read email from the gmail account.
    Get this error:

    Connect to Mail Host
    Postie connection: sockets
    Postie protocol: imap-ssl
    Postie server: imap.gmail.com
    Postie port: 993
Unable to connect. The server said: IMAP - Could not connect to IMAP server imap.gmail.com on port 993. Array
    (
[0] => A0002 NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Invalid credentials (Failure)
    )

Would really appreciate a link to instructions on how to make Postie work with 2 Factor & “making an app specific password.”

    THANKS!!
    Pete A

Here are instructions for creating an app password: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

Once you have done that, in the Postie settings where you specify the Mail Userid (the @gmail.com address you use as a recipient for the incoming emails), enter the app password for Mail Password instead of the Gmail account password.

That’s what I did, and it worked.

THANK YOU! It also worked for me. I found it shortly after I posted my cry for help. Should have cleaned up my post and saved you time.

Hss this been resolved now? “I will release a version that is compatible with the new Google mandate” Is the latest version compatible?

    Thanks,

    Tim
