Giving wordpress its own directory ???

Hi I’m trying to change my url so that the /wp-update part is gone. In the directions it says to change it in the general settings. got that part but then it says to copy index.php and .htaccess files from the WordPress into the root directory.
My problem is that both my public html and www. directories seem to already both have .htaccess and I cant seem to locate the index.php file.

there is an index.html file, but again both directories already contain it. I need to get this url changed so my site can be found in a search, HELP! What do I do?
