Giving apple-touch-icon.png 404 error though it is whitelisted

  • Yesterday Live Traffic shows user blocked with message “blocked: Exceeded the maximum number of page not found errors per minute for humans” for the URL “/apple-touch-icon.png” and “/apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png” though “/apple-touch-icon*.png” is listed as whitelisted 404 URLs. Is the whitelist for crawlers only? How to solve this issue without adding these images to root?

    Yes, “Whitelisted 404 URLs” are applied for crawlers only, I’m not sure what you have for this option:
    “If a human’s pages not found (404s) exceed” under (Wordfence > Options => Rate Limiting Rules), you may need to adjust the value you have there, or even block this IP permanently because it’s not normal to have too much frequent visits to a page/file that is “not found” by human!
