We have had WordFence installed for a while now and appreciate the security of the plugin. However, after the latest update of WordFence, we now receive an error message with our donation plugin, Give.

Give has an article on ways to fix the error, (https://givewp.com/documentation/core/frequent-troubleshooting-issues/admin-ajax-blocked/) but even with WordFence in learning mode we still have this error message: “Give needs to upgrade the database but cannot because AJAX does not appear accessible. This could be because your website is password protected, in maintenance mode, or has a specific hosting configuration or plugin active that is preventing access.”

We have checked with our host and they confirmed that AJAX is working and not blocked from their side. So it must be something coming from WordFence.

    Hi there @magazinetraining

I’m Head of support at Give. See the section on “AJAX is Definitely Working on My Site” in order to try getting around that message. Also, before you do that, please ensure you are on Give version 2.0.2.

Try that and let us know how it goes. In this case I do not believe it’s a WordFence issue. Thanks!

    Hi @webdevmattcrom,

Thanks for your quick reply. We are using Give 2.0.2, but before we mess with the code of our site we want to see what WordFence suggests as a possible fix.

    Thank you again!

OK, just keep in mind, that we’re not suggesting “messing with the code of your site”. We have a guide on how to implement custom snippets like the one in that article. See here:

    https://givewp.com/documentation/resources/adding-custom-functions-to-your-wordpress-website/

It’s possible that our message is triggering incorrectly, which is why I highlight that option, because we support 1000’s of users and I’ve run across this issue enough times already. I’m interested in what Wordfence has to say as well of course, but at least you know your options from our perspective.

    Hi @magazinetraining
One way to know if Wordfence blocked this request by mistake or not is to check the “Live Traffic” feed and filter the entries there by “Blocked by Firewall”, given the information that switching to “Learning Mode” doesn’t work, I assume you won’t find any blocked request there, hence I recommend following Matt’s suggestion as indeed this doesn’t sound like a Wordfence related issue.

Thanks @webdevmattcrom for your input in this thread!
