Someone made a donation and it is flagged in Give as “Failed” and she got a notice that the donation failed. However, her donation amount successfully went through on Paypal. Other donations have been coming through fine but a couple have been marked as failing. Can I simply change the status to Complete and then communicate directly to the individuals that it did go through?

Any reason why some work and some don’t?

Also – your documentation regarding IPN’s only works if you are not using a Personal Paypal account.

If you’ve confirmed that they were successful in PayPal then yes, changing the status in Give will ensure that your Give records match PayPal. The “donation status” does not do ANY actions in PayPal directly at all, it’s only a reflection of the status and ideally will match automatically.

It’s possible that the slow speed of the site is preventing PayPal from communicating the successful status quickly enough. Or something interferred with that communication through a corrupt script or function on your site. It would be helpful to look through your site logs to see if you’re experiencing regular PHP or JS errors. See here for more info on that:

Regarding the docs, can you clarify what you mean? PayPal uses the IPN to communicate all payments to a website, whether personal or through a business account. They have additional tools for PayPal Payflow accounts which we have additional docs on. But perhaps I don’t understand your meaning. Open to any clarifications you have, specifically if PayPal has public docs that contradict what we have.

    Thanks!
