    Hi,

I’m experiencing a problem with a GIF image from WikiCommons that I downloaded. It should show a black computer mouse on a transparent background going from left to right and back. In the media library the image shows incorrectly, but when clicking on the name, it is okay. But as soon as I add it to a post, it’s being shown in the wrong way.

Is there any known issue of WordPress not supporting GIF images?

I hope this can be fixed soon.

Have a nice day and thanks in advance!

Hi HvH, what did you need a forum moderator for?

    Hi Andrew,

I thought this problem might be a WordPress wide issue. That’s why.

I’m sorry to hammer this again, but please re-read the following statement:

That tag is reserved for reporting abuse, spam or something broken in the forums that need fixing.

I tried your link and it went to a login page. Couldn’t see your malfunctioning animated GIF. I run a few dozen WP sites, none have any issues displaying GIF files, animated or otherwise. WordPress isn’t Facebook!

Can you post a link to the original image?

Hi DaveyWavey, what do you mean by

    WordPress isn’t Facebook!

kmessinger: please see the image on WikiCommons.

Here is the image on a test site.

    All is ok.

    Have you tried:
-deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
-switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

Facebook doesn’t allow animated gifs. WordPress? Not a problem. Usually.

    Hi guys,

tnx. I didn’t try the plugins and theme deactivation, since my site stops working then and I can’t allow that to happen, since it’s my business site. Maybe I should use a test site for this, I’ll make one in the future.

Isn’t there any other way of solving this problem? I just can’t believe that a plugin or theme causes this.

Debugging (plugins and theme) is the only way to tell what is going on. You can disable the plugins and switch themes in less than a minute.

It is obvious a local issue. Are you downloading the full size image from Wiki?

Hi, I’m not sure but the file I use is only 228 KB in size.

I use a lot of plugins and an altered standard theme, so I’m afraid of disabling everything – wich is certainly not done in a minute. But I guess I’ll have to try. I’ll probably do that this weekend.

Yay! I managed to solve the problem without deactivating plugins or themes. The answer to my question is:

Insert the GIF file in the largest version you uploaded. If you want to scale it to a smaller size, do that in the editor with dragging the corners. Do NOT scale it during insertion, choosing a smaller version.

This is because WordPress makes different sizes of your image while uploading. With a GIF, that means that WP takes only 1 frame instead of all. That’s why those versions lose important information that makes the picture a GIF and not another format.

That is, speaking of an ANIMATED GIF (with, in this case, a transparent background).
