• I just got an IT job at a place in northern Minnesota. I just had a bunch of sites dumped on me and I need to convert them all over from a different interface to WP. Before I get to that, I need something else. The owner went through a third party web site designing firm that set everything up for him. I am trying to use the theme that they made and lay it over the new websites. So my question is, is there a way to download the raw theme from the admin site so I can use it on the new sites that I am trying to manage?

  • I am assuming you can’t just ask the designer for the theme files? Are they uploaded and running on a WP site currently? If you have access, you should be able to download the theme files with FTP.

The designer wants to be paid to bundle the theme and give it to me and I tried going to the wp-content/themes and it brought me to a blank page. This is why I’m just trying to get it off and on a file on the computer somewhere.

You will need to use FTP to connect to the server, and from there you’ll be able to download all of the files for the themes, the uploads, and any plugins that are used. You can’t do that going through the site on your browser.

I was told that Filezilla is a good FTP. Do you guys think so too? Is there another one that works better?

I like filezilla but I’ve been known to just use Windows too.

Filezilla is one of the better free ones out there. I use it, and a lot of others here do too. There’s more around, so it’s worth looking at them as well if you thik they might work better. Overlal FTP is pretty simple, so there’s not that many different options on how to do things.
