Sorry, another probably silly question but I’ve searched the forums and cannot find the answer.

In my new blog, I want to have different pages which are catergories.

    for example:
    https://www.blog.org/events/
    https://www.blog.org/magazine/

In both cases I’ll tag specific posts as ‘events’ or ‘magazine’ so they display in the right category. But clicking on a category link displays like:
    https://www.blog.org/category/magazine/

How do I get rid of that category bit? I expect it’s something to do with the .htaccess file but can’t find it in that.

    thanks in advance.

  • You cannot find the answer because there is no answer. The answer is – you can’t.

Very bad! Don’t go there with Pages! Use Category_Templates – it’s painless compared to the Pages “solution”.

You can change the word “catgeory” in the permalinks to anything you want…

Hmmmm… that doesn’t do what I want to. There’s certain sections that will be more than just category sections depending on the tags. They will be miniature sections with added content.

    Like ‘events’ or ‘magazine’.

What’s so bad about making a page into a category template?

    thanks

Categories and tags are two different things. Sorry, I will not go into explaining it, there is plenty of information about it.

Events and magazine – should be categories.

Pages in WP have a different meaning. If you want headache – go ahead. I told you what is the native, built-in solution for what you want, but you seem to be like so many others that think they know better. Sorry, usually, this is the moment when I stop providing support.
If there is a built-in solution for something, I don’t see any reason to force WP to do things in an akward way…

Apologies for mixing up tags and categories.

I’m not trying to ‘outsmart’ the system, honest.

The only reason I would prefer a page making it into a category is that it looks like the other categories then.

I am not sure I understand this.

What I mean is, the best I can do is make it into:

    https://www.blog.org/blah/magazine/
    and
    https://www.blog.org/blah/events/

while my other categories (which will only be used as categories) will look also like:

    https://www.blog.org/blah/lifestyle/

I would just rather get rid of the ‘blah’ for the big categories.

while my other categories (which will only be used as categories)
I still have difficulties understanding this. A category is a category is a category.
There is no such thing as “more” category and “less” category or “only” catgeory. All the categories are the same. You are missing some basic understanding about the categories, sorry.

See, I’m trying to build a sub-section called ‘magazine’. Now rather than have a separate wordpress build for it, I thought I’d designate it as a category instead, and simply spruce up its specific category page so it looks more enhanced.

The only problem is that categories are displayed in the URL bar with a ‘category’ (or something) and that just looks messy because it looks like other categories rather than looking special.

But while discussing with you, I think I realised the solution.

I’ll use a re-direct in my htaccess file so that https://www.blog.org/magazine/ points to
    https://www.blog.org/category/magazine/

so the URL looks cleaner while I don’t have to designate it as a Page but can use it as a category!

Good idea? Or am I still confusing you?
