Getting recent blogpost on home page

The current site I am working on is https://rapdevpro.com. On the home page, at the bottom, there is currently a static preview of the current blog post. This is basic HTML code. The owner of the site wants that to update dynamically with the the most recent post. Is this possible? Is there a plug in or something I can use, or some code to drop in? I tried the_excerpt tag, but that makes the entire page disappear, except for the blog post.
