Getting parameters from url in WP page

I’d like to send one of my WP pages a variable this way: https://www.mywebsite.com/page1?var=abc

I’m using a plugin (Insert PHP plugin) that enables me to add php code in my page code.
The problem is, the variable is empty when I check it in my page.
Is there a plugin or sny other method for getting variables in WP?
