    Hello,

All nine sites we have Wordfence installed on “The last rules update for the Wordfence Web Application Firewall was unsuccessful.” message. When trying to manually update we get “No rules were updated. Please verify you have permissions to write to the /wp-content/wflogs directory.”

There are no issues with the permissions on these directories. Again all sites we have updated to 7.8.2 are receiving this message.

Deleting the rules.php resulted in a 0 byte file, but did not resolve the issue and still can not manually update.

No other changes were made to these sites.

    Thank you

As a brief update… I’m going to do a complete uninstall and reinstall on one site, see if that fixes the issue.

Appears a complete uninstall and reinstall fixed the issue. I’ll repeat this across all my sites.

Hi @th3gman, thanks for getting in touch and your subsequent updates.

I may not have caught you in time before the reinstalls, but you may also be successful in simply deleting the wp-content/wflogs folder using FTP or your host’s file manager. Wordfence should try to repopulate it within 30 minutes so could solve any issues if the files are corrupted or unusually large.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

The issue has returned to all sites today. It was gone after reinstalling, but now, I assume because it checked for rules updates, the error is back on every single site.

Deleting the rules file leads to a 0 byte file, and then shortly after, an API error.

    No clue how to proceed.

Hi @th3gman, thanks for your response.

It’s interesting that the initial install (or reinstall) seems to succeed but subsequent updates fail. I’m wondering if there could be issues contacting our servers or ours communicating with your site, which can have multiple reasons for happening.

It might be good to see a diagnostic report from one of the affected sites to see if we can spot any configuration issues or plugins that might be blocking Wordfence Central. Please send us a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com using the link at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Thanks again,
    Peter.
