• Hello everyone,

I am really struggling and would appreciate any advice you can give me. I have a number of wordpress sites. My two main sites when I try to go to the wp-admin to sign in all I get is a web page cannot be found HTTP 404 error. I have cleared my cookies and browser caching. I have tried moving the plugins and re uploading the wp-login.php file but still no joy. One of my other wordpress sites works fine so it should not be browser related. Any ideas please.

    Dave

  • As long as you don’t touch the database you should be fine. It is also recommended to do a full backup before upgrading.

    – Download the latest WordPress files
    – Login via FTP
    – Replace all WordPress files and directories EXCEPT for the wp-content folder

They only one thing I noticed on the latest wordpress download is that there is no wp-config.php only the wp-config-sample.php

By default WordPress does not install wp-config on a manual install. It is created in the install process. In your case, it already exists ?? so you’re good to go.

So right now, do you have your plugins disabled, and are you on the default Twenty Ten theme?

Hi Dremeda, I am just going to disable the plugins and rename the current theme back in two ticks

Right, I am working on https://www.musclebuildinglive.com. I have uploaded all the new wp files and directories except for wp-content folder. I have renamed the plugins folder, I have renamed the current theme folder. When I click on the site I do not get the twenty ten theme I just get a blank page

    Something is off here.

Are you sure your plugins are disabled? No caching enabled?

If Twenty Ten theme is in /themes/, it should default to that theme when no other themes exist, or when you rename the active theme.

Make sure you didn’t rename wp-content/themes/ and that you renamed the active theme wp-content/themes/active-theme.

Just checking when we say ensure the plugins are disabled do we mean simply changing the the folder name from plugin to something different, I have called the original plugin folder plugin.hold. I can see the twentyten inside the wp-content/themes/ folder okay, my current theme is flexibility3 I have renamed this folder to a totally different name

Yes, since you can’t reach wp-admin, the quickest way is to rename to something like plugins.hold and create a new plugins folder.

It sounds like the themes are ok too.

Can you please backup and remove your .htaccess file while the plugins folder is empty and the theme folder name is changed?

Have deleted the .htaccess file and clicked on website https://www.musclebuildinglive.com and it is just a blank page

Just wondering, you’re still on the same theme. https://www.sixpackquest.net/

Can you please rename the theme and default to Twenty Ten? Have you recently made any changes to the theme?
