• Is there anything I can do? We’re running Akismet, but every time I check on the site the spam box is bursting. I attempted to close comments on older posts, but for some reason that closed comments on ALL posts. I manually went in to each post then and clicked off the comment button, but then all comments on THAT post disappeared!

    Any ideas?

    thanks in advance

  • Are the SPAM comments being shown on your site, or being relageted to the SPAM box before they are seen?

If they are shown, you need to mark them as SPAM so that Akismet can use that information to make it’s filtering better.

If they are going to the SPAM box without your intervention, just regularly clear them out. The only thing that they’ll do is take up a very small bit of room in the database, so there’s really nothing to be worried about.

they aren’t being shown..akismet is catching them….i’m just first worried as to why all the massive spam within the past month or so and second, why can’t i turn off comments but leave the comments that are there?

    thanks!!

I’ve found that Aksimet alone does a good job at blocking spam from being posted but it doesn’t prevent the spam from “coming in”. There’s a cool plugin called Conditional Captcha that forces users to enter a Captcha phrase if the comment is suspected to be spam. I use this plugin and it has been great at keeping crap out of the spam queue.
