I’m getting an update failure when I try to change an article author to anyone but me.

“Updating failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.”

My host helped me narrow it down to Wordfence. I’ve tried going into learning mode, performing the actions and then going back to the enabling and protecting mode– but it didn’t help. Any suggestions?

    Hi @cgemprise,

Please deactivate “Prevent discovery of usernames through ‘/?author=N’ scans, the oEmbed API, the WordPress REST API, and WordPress XML Sitemaps” in Wordfence > All Options > Brute Force Protection > Additional Options and try updating the author again.

If this doesn’t solve the issue, can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Thanks,
    Margaret

That worked. Thank you. Follow-up question- is this now a feature that I should leave permanently unchecked? Or was this exercise just forcing an reset of some sort?

    Hi @cgemprise,

Thanks for following up with us.  You might have a plugin or theme installed that is causing this when updating the post author.  You can leave this option off temporarily when making those author updates and re-enable it after.

It is worth noting, an email address or legitimate WordPress username being exposed isn’t generally considered a security issue in itself, even by WordPress themselves:

    Thanks,
    Margaret
