GET requests are now 404, but POST requests still 200

I installed this plugin and renamed wp-login.php. If I try to directly access https://mydomain.com/wp-login.php I see in the access_log the http GET request and that it fails with a 404 error.
However my site is being attacked with a botnet brute-force attack and I keep seeing http POST requests to wp-login.php in the access_log and they are still showing status 200.
