• When I try to customize my theme, I get the following error message:

“Cheatin’ uh? This changeset has already been published and cannot be further modified.”

I did not ever get this message until today. This occurred after I had made a change to my theme using the Customize option, removing a particular widget area. I then turned my construction page back on and started getting this message. I tried deactivating the construction page plugin, thinking maybe that was the issue, but that did not fix the error message. I also tried other solutions typically found on the forums (such as clearing the browser cache) and that did not fix the problem.

It’s not related to the theme because when I try other themes, I get the same error message. I get the error in different browsers and different computers. I tried re-installing WP 4.7. Nothing is working, and I can’t find any info on the web related to this particular error.

One thing that does seem to work is if I switch to a different theme (like 2015), then switch back to Athena Pro, and then click on “Customize”, it works, but only for a moment. If I back out of the customize menu, then try to go back in, I get the error message again.

I also get an option that says “Customize New Changes” below the error message. If I click that, the FIRST time it successfully takes me into the customization menu. But if I back out, and then try again, I get the error message again, and this time clicking “Customize New Changes” just keeps bringing up the same error message.

Running Athena Pro by Smartcat theme. Also using the Smartcat Construction Page plugin.

  • Try de-activating all plugins to ensure there isn’t a confliction occuring, you can re-enable them 1-by-1 to see if you can find the problematic plugin.

    Hope this helps.

OK, I found the offending plugin. It looks like WP Super Cache is not working correctly with WordPress 4.7 and is causing the issue. Thank you for your help.

OK, so I had to change this back to “Unresolved.” Disabling plugins like WP Super Cahce only turned the problem from constant to intermittent.

Now, I’m able to click “Customize” and make changes to my theme appearance, but it only works the first one or two times. After that, I start to get the same “Cheatin'” error. I then have to log out and log back in, or sometimes if I try going to the “Themes” page and then click “Customize” from there, it works.

I’ve also found that only the first edit of my theme customization will save correctly. Once I click “Save and Publish”, any edits I make after that will not save if I again click “Save and Publish”, even though I won’t get any error message when I click save. I have to go back into the dashboard and then re-enter the Customization menu again. But when I do that sometimes I get the “Cheatin'” error again.

I’d suggest that if you want to work on the cutting edge with PHP 7.1 (solution to the above issue is there in case anyone finds this ticket) and video and AWS technology, you should hire a developer, James.

Otherwise you should move back to managed WordPress hosting (something like Flywheel) and work with a more conservative configuration, with support attached. Loudly declaiming with little basis that mature technology like WP Super Cache, FV Player and Amazon S3 don’t work is not so cool.

With all the best will in the world.
