For the last two days I’m getting email notifications every 5 minutes stating

Error downloading GeoIP database from: https://geolite.maxmind.com/download/geoip/database/GeoLite2-Country.mmdb.gz – Forbidden

I read on the Geo site that this meant my host IP may be blocked for some reason. So I unchecked the GeoIP option in the settings to stop the update attempts but that didn’t work. So, I unchecked the “auto update” box and still I keep getting error messages. In fact, I uncheck the “auto update” box hit save and when I return to the settings page it is enabled again on its own.

Now I have deactivated the plugin but it is still attempting to update the database! What gives?

Now I’ve uninstalled it and it’s still trying to download the database. Not a big fan of checkboxes marking themselves and uninstalled software still trying to execute functions!

    Hi @mechanicman,

Your issue is not caused by this plugin because IPGB does not download GeoLite2 database but GeoLite Legacy database.

Basically, IPGB is carefully designed not to burden the database servers. It may access one a month and use HEAD method to check the DB files are updated or not.

So check your other plugins or deactivate all your plugins. If you can’t find a culprit in your current plugins, please check the process on your server, or ask your server administrator to check it. I wonder if some zombie process might be there. I think you had installed some plugin that uses GeoLite2 once in the past.

P.S. You also recommend you to check the WP-CRON on WordPress or the cron on your server. WP-CRON can be checked by WP Crontrol for example. And the cron on your server can be found “/etc/crontab” for unix type server.
