• The plugin works great, except the GeoIP Detection is not working, so it is not excluding continents, like North and South America that do not have to comply with GDPR. I have installed/activated the GeoIP Detection plugin and downloaded the GeoLite2-City database. I selected all continents other than Europe for exclusion; however I am based in the United States and I still get the consent message every time I visit my site.

Am I missing anything in order to get the geo detection working?

  • I have good news and bad news Rahul. The good news is that the pop ups are not coming up on any of the sites. The bad news is, it isn’t showing up in my Proxy tests of the EU either. I turned GeoIP Detector on and off. When it is on, it doesn’t show anywhere. When it is off, it shows up everywhere. Any suggestions?

How you did the proxy test? Is that efficient?

I have a question about the pop up being hidden outside the EU.
If it’s still there, but only hidden, then the site visitor can’t click the button to allow cookies. So does that mean they’ve not opted-in? Will they not get cookies and mess up my cookie tracking?

I’m mostly concerned about analytics but also other visitor services like logging in and out.

One of the proxy sites I used to test was via https://www.proxysite.com/. You can via from EU or US. Check it out.Thank you Rahul!

Rahul, I also asked a friend in Vienna, Austria to go to each site to test it and she confirmed it. Nothing is popping up in the EU territory.

Can you make sure that geo IP plugin is active?

Maybe your friend visits the site before and the cookie might already saved.
To clear that append ?cookie=delete to the end of the website and test.
    Like this
    https://readmk.com/?cookie=delete

In my case, my client is in Belgium, and he said that it is popping up there.

The GeoIP Detector plugin is active. As long as the appended address is present it does show for her. OK, thank you Rahul, I am just gonna trust this all. I believe it is working now.

Will all this be resolved in an update to the Cookie Consent plugin? At that point will I need to remove the code from the function.php?

Again, thank you for all your help, I am hoping people following this thread, will be able to implement the fix.

Have you checked if a hidden notification remains as an empty space? This may be more obvious if you look at the website in a mobile phone.

When the code is in the functions.php it doesn’t make the blank space. Have you tried putting it in the functions.php?

Won’t this be overwritten every time the theme is updated?

Well I have asked the question twice about updates and have gotten no answers. I want to know if I need to remove the code when they update. Sorry man, I would love an answer to this, but for now it seems to work.

…and could the requirement to hack in a php-file be replaced by an update of the plugin? It would seem better and save effort from thousands of WP admins.

    I get it…

@claymade I’m glad that works for you.
Yes, the file will be replaced when the theme updates.
So use a child theme and place the code inside the child theme’s function.php
