Genericon menu icons not displaying correctly

    I am working to move an existing site on a now unsupported theme to the twenty fifteen theme and have used spare hosting to set up a demo version.

    I have set up a new menu which has parent/child entries. It was displaying and working fine.

    I then upgraded from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. Since then the menu icons – which I think are taken from the Genericons set – are not displaying correctly. Upping the screen magnification I eventually worked out the buttons are displaying the code rather than the icon e.g. f431, f432.

    I am one of those users who avoids looking under the hood but hunting around suggests it could relate to utf-8, of which I really know nothing except it is set in the head as the meta charset.

    I really need some help to fix this please.

    P.S. I am using a child theme to add a widget area above the menu and display a logo.
    P.P.S. I have marked an earlier post on this as resolved just to start afresh!
