GeneratePress Theme “Can’t remove footer widget”

Hi, Please some Help. This is my First attempt at building a website. I am using GeneratePress Child Theme & Regular Theme. The problem is I cannot remove or change any of the (3) Footer Widgets (THE GOAL IS TO REMOVE THEM COMPLETELY).The instructions at the bottom of the page say: “To remove or choose the number of footer widgets, go to Appearance / Customize / Layout / Footer Widgets”. I follow the steps carefully (I choose 0 to replace the #3 that is currently there for the 3 widgets then press “Save & Publish”. At that point my changes should be saved the screen fads a little bit as though it was saved & published Then when I attempt to exit the page I get the message that says “Do you want to leave this site? Changes you made may not be saved”. When I choose option to leave (and not stay) THE CHANGES ARE NOT SAVED. I’m using Google Chrome and Windows 10. Everything on the site is up to date including Chrome. Can anyone offer a Solution it’s been over a week and I can not fix this and therefore cannot publish my site.
