GeneratePress Child Theme

Hi,
I want to know that do I need to install child theme right after installing generatepress?
Asking because I installed GeneratePress and did some customizations. Then I needed custom code so I opted for child theme. Was it the correct way? Is it fine to install child theme after making customizations for main theme?
