generate images option not working at all

tried 5.0.1 with images which is ok if you paste the files manually.
then i tried the generate images option to make slides from posts and pages but it does absolutely nothing. under “images”, i can change the option from “custom images” to “generate images” and got the new pulldown fields. then i set the number of slides i want, the post type and then i press “SAVE AND PREVIEW”.
Thats when it switched back to “custom images”, all new settings have been reset and an error is displayed:
