    Hello,

Your plugin was recently referred to us because we have an enormous amount of transient data in our database (probably about 80 MB worth or more).

Upon installing the plugin it is reporting 845,825 Transients. This seems like a very large number to me. What I’ve been told is that we should delete all the expired transients.

I’m a little concerned because I know how much data this is, and I’m not sure what effect it will have on our site. Even if it’s safe to remove all those transients, I also don’t know if your plugin can handle such a large deletion (perhaps it will overload or timeout).

The reason I’m writing you here is simply for advice. I know better than to just try something without researching it first. It’s obvious we should backup our database before doing this, but I wanted to get your opinion first. What do you think about the concerns I raised?

We run an ecommerce website with WooCommerce, and also are caching with WP Rocket. I’m sure a lot of the transient data has to do with these two things.

My thanks ahead of time for your advice.

    ~ Michael

    One other quick comment…

I noticed there’s no way to sort any of the columns, such as “Expires In.” It would be great if you could add sorting. But more importantly, there’s no way to get a total of the expired transients. That would be very useful to know before deleting anything.

That is an extreme number of transients.

Were you told to delete them all to help with performance issues?

    Hi Pippin,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I had a feeling we had an unusually high number of transients. Never having dealt with these before, I wasn’t sure what was normal or not.

What precipitated all of this was a recent change to our database. We were running a find/replace in the DB and noticed how large it had become. Upon further investigation we discovered that 75% of the DB was all transient data.

I ended up asking the developers at WP Rocket about this, and they recommended your plugin. My thinking at the time was that we should reduce the number of transients in our DB so it wasn’t unnecessarily large.

Knowing this is a huge number, do you think we should try deleting all the expired transients? I can’t even tell how many expired transients there are.

Also, could your plugin even handle this? It’s a fair question given the sheer number of transients present.

We’re not really doing anything that extreme on our site. We run an ecommerce website which you can view at https://www.SeattleWeb.Design. Perhaps many of the transients are connected to WooCommerce… I honestly don’t know.

You also mentioned performance issues, which has me concerned. We’re dealing with many performance related issues right now (but from different sources). Could the transients (expired or not) cause performance issues?

I’m open to any advice you have to offer on all of these questions…

My thanks again for your time,

Most likely, you can delete them all with no side effects.

If you do it, I would suggest that you make a full backup of your DB first in the case you need to restore it.

    Hi Pippin,

I’ve also been researching this further and came to the same conclusion. I’m going to be deleting all the expired transients shortly, and am backing up the database literally right now. It’s a whopping 185 MB…

I don’t think we’ll have any problems, but like you said, backup first just in case.

I’ll let you know if I have any problems. Otherwise, my thanks for your input!

    ~ Michael
