I am reaching out to ask a general question. I am looking after a self-hosted WordPress site, which is in need of upgrades. The last upgrade was about 6 months ago. The upgrades needed include PHP, WordPress version, theme and several plug-ins.

Sadly there is no staging site, so all work will need to be on the live site ( unless I can have advice to the contrary).

Before embarking on this upgrade, I am wondering if I can find general advice as to what order these upgrades should happen, to minimise problems – of which I imagine will be several?

    Thank you for reading this.

you can use a free tool like localwp to create a site to test in before accepting actual updates on production (live site) https://localwp.com/

before doing anything make a complete backup of production site site (database and files

after testing in staging site or localwp — my normal order for accepting updates is: plugins, theme, WordPress version, PHP version.

Thankyou Lisa, I will review localwp and hope to make use of it

I have found localwp somwhat counter-intuitive and difficult to use – but this I guess that is due to my skill and confidence levels!

So, I will pursue some other way of creating a clone site. If that fails, I will of course continue to create backups and then work on the live site.

Thank you Lisa for your response to my question, and for the advice on the order of accepting updates.

If you have other advice, I’d be happy to receive it – otherwise, wish me luck!

    Thanks again

Thankyou again for your advice. I have now created a testing site using localwp and I am now able to work safely on the upgrades.
