    Hi Guys, i’m confused???

Every theme has its own control panel to set colours etc, so if i spend hours setting all the settings within the control panel, footer options, colours, headers etc and need to upgrade the theme, i will normally have to delete the theme, activate another theme, then reinstall the updated theme, which will set everything back to default.

If i use a child theme, by setting things in the control panel like footer options, header options, colours etc are not all only written to the style.css file but also footer.php and header.php, etc. so my question is; when creating a child theme, how do you know what files to copy to your child theme folder when all the setting are set in the themes control panel?

and secondly, as i don’t know, when you have a theme update, as stated, i currently have to activate another theme, delete the older theme, then re-install the upgraded theme, should all my settings be saved somewhere so when i re-install the upgraded theme, i don’t have to go through all the settings again, i hope this makes sense?

thanks in advance for any help, just trying to get use to child themes… ??

Not every theme has such options.

No. You can just update the theme whilst it is active.

how do you know what files to copy to your child theme folder

That’s entirely dependant upon which files in the parent theme you wish to customise.

thanks esmi for your quick reply ?? i have purchased themes from places like elegant themes and themeforest and when an update for a theme comes out, only a few themes have an update button, so if i’m using a theme and an updated version is available, you are saying i can just “upgrade” without deactivating etc, if yes, how as i have never seen an upgrade button on most of my themes and…

    2. as i am a novice wordpress user and use the control panel to make changes to the theme, i don’t actually know which files are being changed so to make a child theme word properly, i suppose i would have to find out what files are being changed by the control panel? wouldn’t it be easier to just make a note of any changes rather than having an incomplete child theme?

thanks again for any advice, just trying to understand child themes… ??

we cannot really comment on what update services commercial theme shops do, or don’t, offer. We only support themes hosted on www.remarpro.com here. You really need to ask the vendors of your commercial themes this question.
