• Hi Peter,

I’m using your plugin for ages, everything works fine so far.

I’m already gendering correctly on my pages. So instead of the word Entscheidungstr?ger I’m using Entscheidungstr?ger:innen.

Recently I’ve noticed that wp-Typography is NOT hyphenating that word at all!
Putting it in the exception list (like Ent-schei-dungs-tr?-ger:innen), doesn’t make a difference.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    TIA
    Jürgen

Hi @jvo63. I’ll think about this issue (“*” and “_” would have the same problem). The hyphenation algorithm tokenizes strings into words, punctuation, whitespace and “other”). Unfortunately, :, * and _ are classified as punctuation characters and that is not really changeable from the WordPress side.

There is special treatment for compound words (i.e. words containing at least one hyphen) and it should be possible to extend this for other characters, but it will greatly increase the complexity if simply added to the existing API of the underlying library.

I’ll investigate whether a workaround without a BC break is possible just for the exceptions, but this will probably not happen before the winter holidays.
