Gateway discount is not removed when gateway is updated on order-pay pages

Dear Support!
We provide a gateway discount for credit card payments. When someone chooses the credit card gateway, but the payment is not successful their order will go into the “Pending payment” status.
In these cases we send out a payment link to the customer so they can try again to finish their order again.
On this secondary order-pay page when the payment method is changed to COD, the discount is not removed.
Is there any workaround for this, or do I have to develop a unique solution for this?
