Gaps in image gallery

I am having an issue with the image gallery on some pages – gaps appear in odd places on the grid. For instance if I choose 7 columns, on the second row there are 6 empty spaces to the left, same with 8 and 9 columns. Is this a known bug, and is there a way around it?
