Gallery – seperating the thumbnails and large view

Is there a way for me to separate the thumbnail list of the inbuilt wordpress gallery from the large view of the selected image?

I want to have the thumbnail list along the top of the content area, then some wording on the page and then the large view of the selected image further down the page.

Ideally, there would be some sort of shortcode for the thumnail list and then a shortcode for the large view and I could place them in the relevant place on the page.
