I have created a gallery and would like to replace an existing image with a new one.

If I upload it using the gallery image upload, I just add the new image and cannot replace the existing image because if I change the image link of the existing image it doesn’t seem to save the amendment. Not only that, when I delete the new image that has been added to the gallery, it deletes the source file as well as the image in the gallery.

I’m sure that there is a simple way of doing this so if someone could enlighten me, it would be much appreciated.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Upload the new image via Add Media whilst editing the Post and then delete the unwanted image.

Thanks for the suggestion. The reason why I asked to replace the existing image instead of deleting and uploading a new one would be because I would like to preserve the current gallery image order and also keep the caption informaton.

    Is that possible?

There is no image replacement functionality in the WordPress core gallery. You will have to carry out the replacement manually using the steps I suggested above.

OK that’s fine, thanks for letting me know.
