If you create a gallery in a post with some of the images you have uploaded, you cannot reliably order the images. Drag and drop apparently work, until you SAVE DRAFT and then it’s right back the way it was.
Maybe I’ll try publish and then fix the order, but you can’t fix it while doing a draft. Great feature if it would work.

Does the gallery shortcode change when you update the order and put it back in the post?

The order you select is stored in the shortcode itself, which is in your post and visible in the Text view. The numbers are the IDs of the attachment posts. When you reorder and click the button to update the post, the numbers themselves should reorder in the text.

The problem may be that the order of display in the edit panel does not match the order when the post is displayed. What I see when I edit is backwards from what I see when the post is displayed.
There are 14 images in 2 columns. They are displayed backwards in the editor.

Huh. Dunno then. It works for me on a normal setup, showing the images in the same order in both places.

Do you have any plugins or something in the theme that might be messing with it, perhaps?

Yes, of course I have a ton of plugins. Since when did WP do it all out of the box. But after a lot of messing around, I found that the culprit was WP_Sticky, which is an old plugin that I was using to push one post to the front to act as an opener for my site. I’m now using the built in feature to push the post to the front page.

Not clear why galleries would be so fragile, but I guess it’s ok since WP_Sticky is so old. Now that WP has that feature I can ditch the old crufty plugin.

    Problem solved.
    Thanks, ww
