also if i go with square tiles instead as it is now, the first 2 images are huge, but all images on that page are near enough the same size…
    Thanks, Jess

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

it orders them in colums of 2 over loads of rows so theres loads of blank space. read some other pots and it says that it automatically works out the best for your gallery. but 2 colums over 15 rows is odd.

Jetpack’s Tiled Galleries are built to match your theme’s content_width value. If your theme doesn’t include this value yet, you can set it by following the instructions here:
    https://jetpack.me/support/tiled-galleries/#content-width

if i need to amend the gallery short code as you suggested, where do i edit it or do i just add these lines into the text part of my wordpress page?

To make changes to the gallery shortcode generated by WordPress, you’ll need to switch to the “Text” editor, thanks to the button directly above the right side of the editing area. Once you do so, the shortcode will appear in place of the gallery placeholder. It will look like so:

    [gallery type="rectangular" ids="xx, xz, xy"]

You could edit it to add parameters, like so:

    [gallery size="medium" ids="xx, xz, xy"]

Or to have one column, with large images, for example:

    [gallery size="large" columns="1" ids="xx, xz, xy"]
